Why Swimming helps Michael Phelps keep his skin Acne-freeHe’s incredible, clean, natural skin complexion - which got me wondering. When I was a kid my skin looked exactly like that; naturally helping him maintain such a nice skin appearance.

Weeks later out of curiosity I began a search on the web on the effects of swimming and skin and found taking dips in pools or salt water is an excellent way to better your skin’s appearance.

Pools, Salt Water and your Acne!

This is where swimming, in both chlorinated and salt water comes in as a possible acne treatment. Chlorine, a great way to eliminate acne; just think of the products you use to kill the bacteria when you’re cleaning your bathroom - explains why your skin comes out looking much fresher and cleaner after spending time in chlorinated pools.

The effect of natural salt water is a much more effective way to eliminate the skin blemishes invading your skin than the controlled conditions of a pool.

According to studies, swimming in salty waters detoxifies the skin, cleaning microorganisms and other elements affecting your skin’s appearance and overall health. Salt water is composed of various minerals which help to achieve this, such as; Magnesium (0.13%), which acts to heal skin tissue and provides the skin with anti-allergic properties; Sulfur (0.09%), a naturally occurring disinfectant and helps to detoxify the skin; Calcium (0.04%), strengthens teeth and bones, but also strengthens cell membranes and cleanses pores, and; Sodium (1%), another powerful detoxifying agent, which aids in cell nourishment and in discharging waste.

Natural Acne Treatment

These and other minerals found in salt water, allow the individual to discharge damaging toxins. These same elements can be found in higher concentrations in the Dead Sea - not a bad natural acne treatment, and a great excuse for a trip to Turkey!

In conclusion, swimming, (for leisure or exercise), in salty water provides minerals and nutrients to the skin, improves the blood flow, and increases the diffusion of air in all organs, hence eliminating unwanted toxins in the body.

So do like Michael Phelps, start swimming!

Although many people have experienced effective results from this practice, exercising in chlorinated and salt waters as a treatment for acne has yet to be medically proven. Results can vary from person-to-person, depending on skin type and skin sensitivity.
